10 Things You Should Know About Your Virginia Concealed Carry Permit

Virginia CCW class attendees reviewing handgun safety materials

Virginia is a relatively gun-friendly state, but there are still a handful of rules every owner should have memorized. Here are ten of them.

  • No license or permit is required to purchase a firearm. There is no registry and no waiting period.
  • You must be 21 years or older to obtain a Concealed Handgun Permit.
  • You must be 18 to possess a handgun.
  • 8.3% of Virginians currently have a Concealed Handgun Permit.
  • Open Carry is generally legal (some localities DO have restrictions).
  • Virginia honors all permits issued by other states.
  • Virginia's permit is accepted in 36 states.
  • Pepper spray and electronic control devices are legal.
  • Magazine capacity is limited to 20 rounds unless the carrier has a valid CHP.
  • Firearms are not allowed in state parks unless the carrier has a current CHP.

If you'd like to dig deeper on any of these, our Virginia CCW class covers all of it in detail — legal considerations, carry rules, and the day-to-day realities of responsible carry.
